Fel Temp Reparatio – Galley reverse

The Fel Temp Reparatio coinage was initiated in 348, during a large scale numismatic reform. There a few different reverse types for various emperors. Also, many imitations exist of these coins. Below, the earliest imitations, produced in the western provinces, imitating Trier, Lyon and Arelate prototypes of the type ‘Emporor stg.l. on galley, Victory at helm’.

Trier (Constans)

5.90g/22mm

The coin above imitates a coin from trier with the ‘Emperor on galley holding phoenix and labarum, Victory at helm’ reverse. The mintmark is clearly TRS, officina two of Trier, and the obverse legend is readable as DN CONSTANS PF AVG.

4.74g/25mm

Another imitation of a Constans prototype. This time the prototype was from the first officina of Trier, as the mintmark clearly indicates: TRP.

Lugdunum (Constantius II)

4.25g/23mm

This coin, with an obverse prototype of Constantius (DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG), has a Lyon mintmark (LG readable in ex.). This mintmark and reverse type (‘Emperor spearing horseman’) exists for Lyon with A in left field, but only with a matching A behind the bust of the obverse. Another ‘hybrid’ imitation.

5.22g/24mm

4.70g/24mm

Another two Constantius II imitations of Lugdunum prototypes. Both are of significantly different styles.

Arelate (Constantius II)

Another coin of Constantius, this time with a prototype of the Arelate mint (PARL in ex.)

Uncertain prototype
