One of the last heavily imitated issues is the late
4th century Reparatio Reipvb
‘Emperor raising turreted female’ type. This type was minted in the western
provinces in all mints, for the emperors Theodosius I, Valentinian II and
Gratian, but also for the usurper Magnus Maximus.
3.58g/20.7mm, Ex. De Wit collection.
Emperor and mints of the prototype of these coins
cannot be discerned.
5.36g/22mm
The prototype of this imitation is a Gratian coin
from the Arelate mint – the mint mark SCON in the exergue is clearly legible.
